This is a software engineering team that designs, builds and looks after software for organisations in a number of different industries. You would sit inside a cross-functional delivery team — engineers, analysts and the people who own the outcome — on software that has to hold up under load, join cleanly to everything around it, and go on working long after launch day.
As a Java Developer you would take features from the design conversation through to delivery: writing the code, shaping the data model underneath it, wiring up the integrations, and testing what you build. There is genuine room here to shape technical direction, and the team will expect you to have a view on how it works, not only on what it ships.
What you’ll do
- Design, build and look after Java applications that have to scale
- Write code clean enough to still make sense a year later, and hold that line in code reviews
- Have a real say in technical design and how solutions get put together
- Work across teams to draw out what is actually needed, and turn it into something that runs
- Model and tune the database layer in SQL, with an eye on integrity, speed and headroom
- Build and integrate REST services and the interfaces between systems
- Develop responsive front-end interfaces, alongside UI/UX where the work calls for it
- Test and debug properly, so what you ship holds up on performance, security and reliability
- Push the way the team builds software forward, and pass on what you pick up
What you’ll need
- At least 5 years writing Java, with a strong grounding in object-oriented programming
- Hands-on Spring Boot — or Java EE, or a comparable framework
- SQL you are genuinely confident in, including how a schema ought to be put together
- A track record of building and consuming REST services, and joining up systems that were never designed to talk to one another
- Agile delivery, Git and an issue tracker such as Jira as part of your normal week
- Sharp analytical instincts, and the habit of solving the problem rather than the symptom
- Attention to detail, and real ownership of what you put your name to
Nice to have
- Angular or React on the front end — ideally four years or more of it
- A working understanding of how OAuth and similar security standards hang together
- Design patterns applied with judgement rather than by rote
- Exposure to the wider modern toolchain
- A Computer Science degree or similar – though practical experience is weighed on its own merits
