Design the learning for the teams that carry a business day to day — client service, call centre and back-office people whose processes shift under them and whose training has to keep up. This is a Learning Designer seat built close to the work: practical programmes that land with the people doing the job, not a content factory turning out modules nobody uses.
You report to the Learning & Development Design Lead and work alongside teams, subject matter experts and facilitators. The brief is simple to say and hard to do: find the real performance gap, then design the thing that closes it — and keep it accurate as the business changes underneath you.
One practical thing to weigh before you apply: the office sits outside the Cape Town metro, so for anyone living in town this is a real daily drive. The role settles into a hybrid pattern — three days a week in the office and two from home — once an initial onboarding period, worked full-time from the office, is behind you.
What you’ll do
- Partner with teams across the business to understand their challenges, find the performance gaps and recommend practical learning solutions
- Run learning needs analyses and pin down the knowledge, skills and behaviours people actually need to do their jobs well
- Work with subject matter experts to draw out what they know, spot the process gaps, and turn both into learning that is easy to apply
- Apply instructional design and adult learning principles to design blended programmes for in-person, virtual and self-paced audiences
- Build the full kit — facilitator guides, learner guides, e-learning, formative and summative assessments and performance support tools
- Work with facilitators so the material is easy to deliver and genuinely fit for purpose
- Keep content accurate and current as processes change, improving it alongside the stakeholders who own the work
What you’ll need
- A bachelor’s degree in instructional design, education or a related field
- At least 5 years designing learning for operational environments — client service, call centres or back-office teams
- A strong grounding in instructional design, adult learning principles and blended learning approaches
- Proven work translating business requirements into learning solutions, and extracting organisational knowledge and process detail from stakeholders to build curricula
- A portfolio of high-quality learning content across in-person, virtual and self-paced digital delivery
- Hands-on with learning management systems and digital authoring tools
- Excellent writing, with a talent for making complicated things simple
- Strong stakeholder and project management — several pieces of work at once, priorities that move
- Willing and able to travel from time to time
Nice to have
- Curiosity about new learning approaches, technologies and trends, and the habit of trying simpler ways to help people learn
- Experience designing for high-volume operational teams where content evolves continuously
- Comfort with ambiguity and a fast pace — the answer is rarely handed to you fully formed
What’s on offer
- Design work with real reach: your programmes land with the teams doing the job every day, and you get to see whether they worked
- Close access to the business — teams, subject matter experts and facilitators, not a ticket queue
- Room to shape how learning is done, in a team that wants it simple, useful and energising
Hybrid — three days a week in the office, after an initial full-time in-office onboarding period. Permanent.
