QA Engineer
Location: Cape Town (in office)
Type: Permanent
Experience: 2+ years
About the role
We’re working with an established retail business looking for a QA Engineer for a combined manual and automation role, with a strong emphasis on automation skills. You’ll build and maintain quality across the software the business relies on, working closely with the development, product, and operations teams to make sure solutions are well-tested and delivered to a high standard.
What you’ll do
• Develop, design, and maintain robust QA processes, including automation frameworks, test plans, and test cases
• Build and maintain end-to-end automated test suites (functional, integration, regression, API) to validate that software meets business requirements and quality standards
• Collaborate with development, product, and operations teams to ensure requirements are testable, understood, and delivered with quality
• Execute manual, exploratory, and regression testing when needed, especially for complex business flows and edge cases
• Identify, log, document, and track defects; work with developers to reproduce issues, prioritize fixes, and verify them
• Review requirements and design documents, giving quality feedback early in the lifecycle
• Define, track, and report quality metrics (defect density, open defects, test and automation coverage), contributing to continuous improvement
• Help shape CI/CD pipeline integration so automated tests run as part of the build/deploy flow
• Mentor and guide other QA team members where relevant, sharing best practice
• Contribute to improving QA process, test strategy, documentation, and cross-team collaboration
What you’ll bring
• Proven experience in software QA / test engineering, ideally with several years in automation testing
• Strong programming or scripting skills to write automated test scripts, ideally C#, comfortable working with code rather than just manual tests
• Solid understanding of testing methodologies, the SDLC, and test automation best practice
• Experience designing and implementing automated test frameworks and suites, for both new features and regressions
• Manual testing experience as needed, including exploratory, edge-case, UAT, and scenario-based testing
• Familiarity with test management and defect-tracking tools (Jira, TestRail, Bugzilla, or equivalent)
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills
• Strong attention to detail, spotting subtle issues and documenting them clearly
• Good communication and teamwork, liaising with developers, product owners, and stakeholders
• Able to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced agile environment
Nice to have
• API testing (REST/SOAP), performance testing, or security testing
• Modern test automation tools and frameworks (e.g. Selenium, Cypress, pytest)
• Version control, branching strategies, and collaboration workflows (Git or equivalent)
• A continuous-improvement mindset and proactiveness in quality advocacy
What makes you a great fit
• A critical thinker who anticipates issues early and solves problems proactively
• Strong attention to detail and pride in accurate, clear, well-structured work
• Clear communication with both technical and non-technical teammates
• Collaborative and supportive, contributing positively to a values-driven team culture
• Calm under pressure, able to manage priorities in fast-moving environments
