Healthcare runs on systems that are never allowed to stop. Behind the clinical platforms sit the servers, databases, networks and backups that carry deeply sensitive data — and this role is the person who keeps that estate healthy, secure and available.
This is hands-on systems engineering, not a ticket queue. You will build and maintain the server and application environments, take the escalations nobody else could crack, and have a genuine say in how the infrastructure is designed as it grows.
What you’ll do
- Install, configure, deploy and maintain operating systems, servers and application software across Linux/Unix (Red Hat, SLES) and Windows Server.
- Monitor system performance, capacity and uptime, keeping high availability genuinely high.
- Identify, diagnose and resolve hardware, software and network issues promptly, across every layer.
- Perform regular backups, disaster recovery tests and data integrity checks.
- Provide 2nd and 3rd level support for escalated incidents, for internal staff and external users — remotely too, guiding users with patience and clarity.
- Work with developers to find and fix performance bottlenecks in applications and systems.
- Contribute to infrastructure design and improvement initiatives.
- Write the documentation, standard operating procedures and knowledge-base articles that stop the same incident happening twice.
- Spot IT risks early and help implement data security and compliance measures.
What you’ll need
- At least 5 years in a similar technical support, infrastructure or systems administration role.
- An applicable tertiary qualification — degree, diploma and/or technical certifications.
- Proven Linux/Unix (Red Hat, SLES) and Windows Server experience.
- Strong hands-on work managing and troubleshooting MS SQL and/or MySQL and/or Mongo databases.
- Solid networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, OSI layers).
- Virtualisation experience — Hyper-V, KVM, VMware or ProxMox.
- Backup and recovery technologies, preferably Veeam.
- Scripting in Bash, Python or PowerShell.
- A security-first mindset, with a strong grasp of cybersecurity and compliance requirements.
- Communication that works both ways — you can translate a technical problem for someone who is not technical, in clear written and spoken English.
- Willingness to do after-hours maintenance or emergency support when it is needed, and your own reliable transport to get on site for those callouts.
Nice to have
- Cloud or hybrid experience (AWS, Azure).
- DevOps principles and tooling — CI/CD pipelines, Ansible, Docker.
- Automation frameworks and infrastructure-as-code.
- Monitoring and alerting tools such as ELK, Prometheus or Grafana.
- Exposure to SIP/VoIP technologies.
- Experience in healthcare IT, or another environment handling sensitive data.
What’s on offer
- A broad estate to own — Linux and Windows, virtualisation, databases, networking and backup — rather than one narrow slice of it.
- A seat in infrastructure design and improvement work, not just keeping the lights on.
- Work that matters: the systems you look after carry information people genuinely depend on.
- A team that shares knowledge deliberately, and real backing for your ongoing technical development.
